GE Hackathon Hack the Home

It’s not the first time members of DBS have pulled an all-nighter to meet a deadline, but it may prove to be one of the most successful in our 15 year history. As part of GE’s 33-hour Mega Hackathon: Hack the Home Challenge, a team of four developers, including two from DBS, fought off the temptations of a good night’s rest to take home 3 awards including 2nd place: Best Overall Design with an Appliance.

About Hackathon

Hosted by GE and Local Motors at FirstBuild’s microfactory in Louisville, the event challenged teams of 300 makers, designers and engineers from across the country to develop creative innovations using GE appliances for the home of the future. Hackathon contestants competed for more than $60,000 in cash and prizes. Designs were judged by representatives from FirstBuild and the Mega Hackathon’s more than 30 sponsors including Atmel, AT&T, Delta, Renesas, Texas Instruments and

The team, which consisted of developers Nelson Tanquero, Jose Padron, and DBS’s Mark Shelton and Michael Large, put their mobile design and development skills to use and built an app that used voice commands to control the water dispenser on a GE refrigerator. For their creativity, the team placed in 3 categories and took home more than $3,200 in prizes.
